Pictured here is the stern end of Amelia Earhart, a 1976 Ford Econoline that once took me on a cathartic and creative adventure through most of the continental US. I gutted the four-wheeled beast then wallpapered, painted, recarpeted and adorned her with flokatis, faux furs, and original artwork. Romance is never complete for me without the details of spacial aesthetics. While driving, it’s the panorama of the landscape that has you, but when the cherry blossom curtains are drawn at night, one must feel embraced by the familiar comfort of home sweet (motorized)home.

What a wonderful getaway if not living space that would be! In my work, I aim to help clients create aliveness in their spaces through color and decor choices. The tree house, I believe, takes that concept to a whole new level (hmm, nice pun). I hope you enjoy sharing in my recent indulgence. As you can see, visions range from Ewok to Jetsons and everything in between.

Kitchens are excellent spaces to illuminate with light and bright color. These tend to be creative and social rooms where a lively mood is often preferred and can be accentuated with vibrant hues.

With all the different surfaces and elements–cabinets, counters, walls, appliances–you have a variety of ways to incorporate various colors or temper accent brights with more subdued tones.

Tile is not only wonderfully functional in a kitchen, it also offers greater possibilities for color expression. Plus, I love the aspect of texture it provides. Recycled, reclaimed and tile made of sustainable materials are earth-conscious options. Anything from cork to recycled glass to recycled highways can be reborn as counters and backsplashes–pretty neat-o!

Everyone is talking about how to do more with less in these compromised economic times. Elle Décoration has a feature on a family home where just about everything is second-hand or DIY — from this home-built loft bed with its paint-splattered ladder to modest vintage accessories made from flea market finds, like a DIY mobile made from old toys…

In this kids room, a vintage twin school desk and blackboard lend a retro charm, as do old alphabet charts strung up nonchalantly on the wall.

And anyone could copy this idea: an old busted wire lampshade carcass strung up with vintage (or outgrown) toys.

Railing is deep burgundy, entrance facade greets with a rich & bold dusty brown, main exterior is a mid-level taupe and we used a lighter ash prairie grass for corridors.

After we chatted a bit, I took a look at her furniture and appliance choices then assembled a color scheme that challenged all her former inclinations. I knew it was quite a leap for her but she decided to trust me and finally embraced the bold and rich palette I prescribed. Her trust paid off.

I chose a gorgeous calico granite and a spicy rich earth color for the walls to bring out the deep autumn tones in the cabinets and counters.

The main body of the house was done in a sophisticated grey–neither too warm nor cool. The effect was sleek, but not sterile and proved to be an excellent bridge and harmonizer for all the other colors.

Her bedroom she wanted sultry and not stereotypically feminine. A deep mocha accent wall is especially enveloping and warming in the evening. A bold accent color provides a good backdrop to art, lighting and furniture.

The master bath came with stone tile in subtle pinkish hues. This client detests pink so when I suggested a dusty rose she immediately protested. However, once applied, she ended up loving it even more than she’d expected to hate it.

The deep berry accent in the guest bedroom was another take on my client’s favorite color–purple.

A more vibrant purple was used for the funky eliptical Jetson’s-syle bar area. The paint is a specialty “suede” to mimmick both the color and texture of the suede barstools–definitely the biggest hit with my client.

This historic Boulder home was in dire need of a repaint! In this case, the owners had some colors in mind, but wanted to be sure before painting. Basically, I came in and confirmed that their first choice would be beautiful, but they needed a proper trim color to really make it work. We stayed simple and traditional. I specified placement of color and gave my trim selection. In all, this was a very quick and simple consultation, but invaluable to the owners as they were preparing to spend a significant amount of money on paint and labor. The result was gorgeous simplicity.
